A few hours ago Joe Biden declared February 21 through February 27, 2022, as National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
This proclamation is imperative to prevention and early prevention of eating disorders.
Despite the fact that eating disorders have among the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, the shame and stigmatization of eating disorders often prevent people who are suffering from seeking help.
Eating disorders — including binge-eating, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa — affect people of all backgrounds and genders.
The stigma needs to end.
I’m not ashamed to say that I’ve struggled with two different disorders in the past.
Even as a Nutrition Coach, I still struggle with Body Dysmorphic Disorder and refuse to weigh myself, as the number on the scale has been my trigger since I was 12 years old.
With my certifications, I am NOT QUALIFIED to treat or diagnose an eating disorder, but I can and I have happily supported clients on their journey through recovery.
This week I will be sharing statistics and personal stories to bring further attention to #nationaleatingdisorderawarenessweek and to let people know that you have NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF.
If you don't know where to start contact me and I will guide you to the right resources. I promise to hold our conversation in confidence.
Help is out there. You can and you will get better. You just need to reach out.
