Tread Vs. Outside

One of the questions I get asked frequently is what is better for you if you are new to running or are training to run a race: running on a treadmill, or running outside?

Both have their advantages!

Treadmills provide the safety of being in your own home (not worrying about strangers or getting hit by cars), help with pacing practice and training for hills, can be done at any time and in any weather, and is generally easier on your legs.

The biggest downside? The tread belt prevents the utilization of natural leg turnover, which usually assists with speed, but can be a big challenge when you get to race day - and those decreased paces outside can be defeating.

Outdoor running provides a ton of distractions! You get to choose where you want to go, say hi to cute dogs, enjoy your surroundings, and adjust to natural surface changes. Because you are using your own momentum, you are engaging more and different muscles.

Most importantly, you are challenging yourself mentally to keep pushing on your own.

When I first started running, I exclusively ran outside. I don't think I would have improved as much as I did without buying my treadmill.

A tread purchase doesn't have to break the bank! I bought mine off of Facebook Marketplace for $400 - it's still going strong 4 years later despite my using it 3 - 4 times a week.

No matter what equipment you have or don't have, the most meaningful thing you can do is be CONSISTENT with your training and KEEP MOVING!
